I often hear friends ranting about equality and feminism and all those very important things that we ignore on a daily basis but Miss Travel reminded me of something I often think. It often seems to be perceived that sexual inequality is something created solely by these big powerful, sleazy men with no respect for women, who believe they are nothing more than objects and act like ‘Hey girl, wash my dishes’. But in reality I think that women are probably as big a hindrance to sexual equality as men are.

Some women seem to be little more than objects, they literally will do anything for the man knowing a shiny shone will be the reward. Of course none of the women I know are like this but the steeply inclined slope to equality is being littered with obstacles just as much by our own kind and this often gets looked over. Many feminists will comment on the shallowness of gossip magazines and the pressures on women to look perfect and the ‘ring of truth/ring of fat’ that circles nasty body parts in a trashy magazine. It is most definitely trashy and degrading but, unfortunately, is probably made by women and women LOVE to read it and go ‘look at the weight on her elbow’ because women love to gossip. And that is generally all women and not just the shallow diamond loving kind. Read More »

Since the creation of Levittown in the early 1950’s people have flocked to belong within a social community, thinking they can ‘become someone’ simply by being there. The most recent migration of this kind is to the hundreds of virtual communities enveloping the internet. Behind the use of e-mail and search engines, the use of ‘general community’ is the third most utilized facet of the internet, proving these communities are frequented by millions every day.

Essentially all communication technologies are seen as an ‘artificial substitute for something more ‘real’’. Society has been way since Plato argued that writing lacked the same personal impact than that of speech. Akin to most elements involving advancing technology this subject is not without controversy. Critics argue that the term community cannot be synonymous with virtual interaction, the one side of this argument claims that virtual community distracts us from RL (Real Life) community, becoming problematic to the RL itself. The counter argument is that the virtual reinvigorates the lacking RL community by providing a place to speak with less boundaries. I intend to investigate these arguments by examining how communities function in society and the implications on the individual users.

It’s great to see that the mainstream audience is now showing enough interest in internet studies to warrant a BBC documentary series explaining the origins and implications of the world wide web.

The opening episode presents us with a well rounded selection of anecdotes and case studies leading up to where the mainstream internet is today. This is enhanced by a host of internet entrepreneurs and researchers voicing their comments at the appropriate moments to give the stories more depth. An example of these experts are Mark Zuckerberg – founder of facebook, Al Gore – Vice President and Stephen Fry. Now I like Stephen Fry as much as the next person but why next to other experts doesn’t he have a title, even ‘journalist’ would suffice but instead he is left as an eternally indefinable character.

The reports on Tim Berners-Lee were particularly interesting, especially the fact that he has never earned a penny directly as the creator of the World Wide Web when he could be an exceedingly rich man if he had chosen this route. This was cleverly juxtaposed with the back story of Bill Gates and how he began charging for software. Truth be told he came across as immoral and greedy.

The ending question was one of weather the internet was truly democratic or simply a new business model. Although the latter may be true a new form of ‘level playing field’ has undoubtedly been created.

I look forward to the rest of the series and recommend it for anyone who has any interest in the internet. So check it out on BBC iplayer.
